Các nhà nghiên cứu thuộc Đại học Tufts ở Boston, Anh nói các axit béo omega 3 trong cá có thể bảo vệ khỏi chứng bệnh trên. Cuộc nghiên cứu đã phỏng vấn gần 3.000 người về chế độ ăn uống chung và sau đó kiểm soát sự phát triển của chứng AMD trong tám năm. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy sự tiến triển của cả hai dạng khô và ướt của AMD giảm 25% nơi những người có chế độ ăn uống giàu axit béo omega 3.

Ngoài ra, cuộc nghiên cứu cũng nhận thấy việc dùng những thực phẩm như bánh làm từ nguyên hạt lúa mì, thứ phóng thích đường rất chậm vào trong máu, có thể ngăn ngừa chứng AMD phát triển.
